#RECRUITMENT
In the Whiteman Lab, we are invested in recruiting and supporting Black and Brown undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers interested in STEM.
We have created a list of programs that can connect undergraduates with resources they need to succeed in our or other STEM labs at UC Berkeley, the vast majority of which feature paid funding opportunities. If you are interested, remember to ask your grad student or postdoc mentor for advice on applications.
Support Programs
EOP STEM: This program is under the umbrella of the Educational Opportunity Program at Cal for URM, low-income, and/or first-generation college students. They offer i-clicker rentals, graduation gown rentals, advice/general support, and always connect you to someone to answer your questions if they can't. Specifically for the EOP STEM Mentorship program, more senior undergrads are paired with a freshman/sophomore student with similar interests for the semester. There are three mandatory check-ins between the mentor/mentee and other miscellaneous events (e.g. study groups/socials/workshops) throughout.
ENTOPOC: An initiative started to support POC students in entomology. Students can apply to gain membership to professional entomological societies. This year they are also supporting some registration for the ESA Conference. Students are paired with a mentor at the ESA Conference to talk about overlapping interests and meet other colleagues.
CalNerds: I'm not a part of CalNerds, but I have a lot of friends who are and will join them in studying in the CalNerds space at Stephens Hall. I think it's open to any URM student interested in STEM, but from first glance seems like a lil skew towards engineering/CS. I know they have a lot of resources and programs though to offer!!!
Cientifico Latino: A mentor-match program for URM students (not just Latinx) applying to graduate school. Undergrads/recent grads are paired with grad/postdoc mentors who meet to talk about the process of applying and how to reach out to PIs.
Summer Funding Programs
AmGen Scholars Program: National summer program to increase research opportunities for students committed to pursuing careers in sciences.
NSF CAMP Scholars Program: Program focuses on increasing number of baccalaureate degrees granted to historically underserved students in STEM, and supporting continuation for graduate studies.
NSF Summer REU: Integrating Biology from Molecules to Ecosystems: Research in the MCB department. $6,000 stipend + paid on-campus housing in International House + 19 meals/week.
SURF: Several different summer programs that can fund undergraduate research.
UC LEADS: This undergraduate program provides two summers of faculty mentored research at UC campuses and leadership development.
URAP Summer Program: Each year, the program offers a small number of stipends to allow some URAP apprentices to continue working on their research projects over the summer.
School Year Funding Programs
Biology Scholars Program: It's an on-campus organization for URM students studying the natural sciences at UC Berkeley; it helps students navigate higher education, find research opportunities, form study groups, and ultimately build community. John Matsui runs it in coordination with other individuals and former BSP students. Undergrads can apply and once accepted, they have to take 2 classes at Cal and attend the All Student Meeting each year.
Firebaugh Scholars Program: For undocumented/AB540/DACAmented, formerly incaracerated, and/or system-impacted scholars. Firebaugh Scholars receive funding and academic support to design and complete an independent faculty-sponsored research project over the course of one academic year. Provides application assistance to graduate and post-bac opportunities.
Haas Scholars Program: For seniors completing a thesis.
Mcnair Scholars Program: For first-gen, low-income, URM students. Research funding for summer as well as reduced graduate school admission costs/waived GREs!
Miller Scholars Program: Provides outstanding community college transfer student the opportunity to develop leadership, research or community service skills and apply them in practice. Miller Scholars receive up to $5000 for Fall/Spring, and up to $2000 for the summer between years one and year two.
Thanks to Marissa Sandoval, Lab Wundergrad, Rebecca Tarnopol, Diler Haji, Julianne Pelaez, and all of our lab members for creating this list!
